Ten years of Belgian law on internment: current situation
Since its implementation, the law of 5 May 2014 on internment continues to raise questions. The number of internment measures imposed continues to rise, while the living conditions and care provided to internees are raising concerns among researchers, professionals and human rights defenders.
📄 Two recent reports offer findings and recommendations that are essential to this debate:
•Report ‘Mental illness behind bars: the urgent need to break the deadlock’, published jointly by Unia and the Central Prison Supervisory Council (CCSP), which reviews current practices and makes recommendations for improving care in detention
•Study by the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC/INCC) on data monitoring, factors influencing changes in the number of hospitalisations and gaps in existing documentation
The authors of these reports, accompanied by professionals in the field, will compare their analyses to discuss how the justice of the peace and criminal justice systems treat some of the most vulnerable people living with mental disorders.

On 31 January 2026, Hélène Liégeois from the Sin’RJ network submitted her application to participate in the 29th National Conference on Psychiatry in Prisons, scheduled to take place in Paris in June 2026.
This application is part of an ongoing commitment to open up a space for reflection and dialogue on the transdisciplinary synergies between care, justice and psychosocial support, based on her dual role as a relative of a person in prison and founder of the Sin'RJ network.
Responses to this application will be communicated in March 2026.
